Our History
The Carmacks Skookum Construction Group was created on March 11, 1974 with company names derived from the Gold Rush of 1898 in the Yukon. It was George Carmacks, Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie that discovered gold in 1896 that caused the Great Klondike Stampede. It was the same pioneering spirit that motivated the founders of the company, Walter Babiy, George Buxton, Harold Irwin and Alvin Reed to form the company and enter the civil construction market in Alberta. After years of service, George Buxton was the first to leave the organization in 1987 followed by Walter Babiy who retired in 1990; Harold Irwin who retired in 1994 and finally, Alvin Reed who retired in 1999. Carmacks continues to operate today under the direction of a dedicated team of long service employees.

Over the years, the Carmacks organization has grown from a small municipal road contractor to a multi-faceted general civil construction service and highway maintenance organization providing services throughout Western Canada from the U.S. border to the Arctic Circle. The scope of work performed today includes Highway Construction, Highway Maintenance; Industrial Site Construction; Bridge Construction and Maintenance, and Municipal Construction as well as other related work opportunities.

In 2012 the Carmacks Group of of companies became part of Eurovia Canada (a VINCI subsidiary) which operates mainly in Europe, but also holds significant positions in Canada and the United States.  With over 42,000 employees, Eurovia operates a network of 300 works divisions and 875 industrial production sites including quarries, binder plants, asphalt plants, recycling units and road equipment production units.  Eurovia's business lines include transportation infrastructure and urban development, industrial production, maintenance and services.  Carmacks has access to these substantial resources, giving it the strenght to ensure ongoing growth and development.

Although Carmacks has evolved over the years, there is a long standing commitment of integrity and working in the spirit of an agreement, honouring relationships and doing what it takes to make a contract successful. With the opportunities that Alberta and Western Canada have to offer, Carmacks will continue to grow and prosper. Carmacks is proud to be a part of the History of Infrastructure in Western Canada.
