SH 791 East of Airdrie

Airdrie Bridge Building
Secondary Highway 791 was upgraded with wider shoulders. The bridge that crossed the Rosebud river needed to be replaced with a bridge that could handle the new truck weight requirements. The old 3 span bridge, which consisted of 8m., 12m., and 8m. spans, was removed except for the concrete piers. Concrete was poured to raise the piers. The new bridge was constructed on new abutments and pier tops with SCC girders placed on top of them. Silica fume concrete was overlaid across the entire deck to provide a solid connection.

The new bridge now boasts 3 spans measuring 10m., 12m., and 10m. The job was completed well within the timeline of the contract. Two factors slowed the progress of this job, however. The main contractor had stripped the asphalt off the road leading to the bridge prior to the arrival of the bridge crew. With 15 days of rain (record rainfall for June), work was slowed and, sometimes halted. It became impossible at times to move equipment onto the bridge site due to the conditions of the road leading to the bridge.

The quality of work was commended by the AIT representatives upon final inspection.
