City of Edmonton
City of Edmonton South LRT Extension
The City of Edmonton extension of the Light Rail Transit from the University Hospital to 23rd avenue began in the fall of 2007 with the installation of new storm and sanitary lines to accommodate new lane widths and Century Park Station.
As a subcontractor to PCL Construction Management Inc., Carmacks is responsible for cement stabilization concrete, curb and gutter re-alignment, construction of multi-use trails, additional paved lanes and overlays along 111Street between the Whitemud Freeway and 23rd Avenue.
In Spring 2008, the road work began by removing some of the old lanes and adding new ones to the outside of 111 Street to accommodate the LRT which would run down the center. In mid-summer 2009, the road works will be completed and the LRT trackway will be installed to Century Park Station.
There were many challenges on this job due to the number of subtrades involved. Work scheduling was an issue as well as the traffic patterns were often changing throughout the summer which made traffic accommodation and pedestrian movement a top priority.
