Suncor Energy Inc. - Firebag Site
SRU & SULPHUR TREATMENT EXPANSION
Suncor Firebag’s facility is located 40km Northeast of Suncor’s main oil sands plant. Firebag is an instu operation, which taps into oilsands that are too deep to mine and reduces environmental impact.
The Firebag facility uses Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD). Parallel pairs of horizontal wells are drilled - one for steam injection and one for oil recovery. The recovered bitumen is then sent by pipeline to an upgrader.
With increasing bitumen production, environmental regulations still have to be met. To meet these regulations, Suncor is constructing a Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU). As part of this project, Carmacks has been given the task to provide firewater protection for this unit. Carmacks has successfully completed the multiple tie-ins and fire hydrant installations to the existing system. This was done with minimal down time and affect on the live operating plant.
